The Lombard Kitchen
PHOTOGRAPHER: Sarah Crost LOCATION: OAK PARK IL
This 1913 American Foursquare home in Oak Park presented a classic KMI challenge: a kitchen that had never been asked to do enough. By removing a wall and rethinking the entire floor plan, we transformed a closed-off, underperforming room into a generous, light-filled gathering space that works for everyday family life and easy entertaining.
Repeated curves throughout the space — in the cabinetry, the range hood, and the archways — soften the home's traditionally boxy proportions and create a sense of movement and flow. The color palette is warm and inviting without feeling heavy, balancing the architecture's historic character with a fresh, modern sensibility.
The clients' personal collections of pottery and their own original artwork are woven throughout the design, making this kitchen unmistakably theirs. The result is a full-service kitchen renovation that honors a century-old Oak Park home while giving it the functionality a modern family actually needs.
