The Columbian Family Room
PHOTOGRAPHER: Erin Konrath
A family room should do a lot of things well — absorb daily life, feel welcoming to guests, and look beautiful doing both. This project updated an underperforming family room into a cozy, layered entertaining space that works harder and looks better than anything that was there before.
The design focused on getting the foundation right: a furniture arrangement that actually supports conversation, textiles and materials chosen for durability as much as beauty, and an overall palette warm enough to feel inviting without closing in. Thoughtful accessory layering gives the room depth and personality, making it feel curated rather than decorated.
The finished space is the kind of family room that gets used — for movie nights, for hosting, for the everyday tumble of family life — without ever looking like it does.
